Description:
Teachers strive to differentiate instruction in order to maximize all students’ mastery of the math curriculum. Finding the most effective methods, however, can be a continual challenge.
Research has uncovered practices that are most likely to result in greater mathematical achievement for struggling students. This professional learning opportunity will introduce teachers to best practices in math instruction specifically aimed at struggling math learners. It will examine some of the research-based practices in detail and show how they align with the CT Core Standards for Mathematics.
Day one will involve defining, examining, and practicing explicit and systematic instruction, with examples presented at different grade levels. It also will address task analysis and instructional scaffolding. Day two will concentrate on manipulatives and models. The facilitators will present the Concrete-Representational-Abstract sequence, and participants will have opportunities to create their own models. Participants will come away from these sessions with specific strategies to use in their classrooms.
